Monster Within

When I student taught I used a lesson my mentor teacher had in her bag of tricks for a 6th grade project.  It was a fun project, so I thought I would use it this year with my 6th grade.
This self-portrait project has a fun twist.  The first week of this project, I had my students do a step-by-step drawing of a face using correct proportions.  This led into what we would be doing the next week so they could come in and jump right into the step-by-step again.  The students did a half and half drawing of themselves and the monster within themselves.  We discussed monster qualities and I also allowed the students to add in animal characteristics.  I stressed the importance of making the realistic half as close to them as possible, considering eye color, hair length, etc.  I had students color with colored pencils.

My theme for our school art show coming up in May is "Wild about Art" and I thought this could fit in even though it is not as literal as animals.

  1. I just discovered your blog through another blog. At first I thought I was clicking on a blogger I already follow: "Artful Artsy Amy"!
Anyhow I'll be back to explore more, but in the meantime, I want to STEAL this lesson! What fun! I don't know if I'll have time for it this year, but if not, I'll certainly give it a try next year. The kids would love it, I'm sure!
